(Photo by Steven Branscombe/Getty Images)Adrian Martinez had a marvelous true freshman quarterback season for Nebraska football, even amid the adversity that hit the program early in the year, and his own injuries.Martinez finished the season with 2,617 passing yards, 17 touchdowns, and eight interceptions on a 64.6-percent completion rate, and a solid 7.54 yards per attempt. He was also second on Nebraska’s roster with both 629 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground. Most years, that would be good enough to win an offensive freshman of the year award. However, that wasn’t the case for Martinez in 2018.Purdue had its own superstar frosh this fall: wide receiver Rondale Moore. While Martinez was among the Big Ten’s best quarterbacks in year one, Moore was one of the best offensive weapons in the entire country. He finished first in the nation with 103 receptions, 10th in yardage (1,164), and seventh in receiving touchdowns (12). Moore also ran for 203 yards on 18 attempts, with one score. Add in return yardage, and Moore was fourth in the FBS in total yardage. Most of us find it hard to argue with Rondale Moore winning Big Ten Freshman of the Year, but Nebraska football fans aren’t happy with Adrian Martinez missing out. They made themselves known on Twitter after the award was announced.Absolute BS. The best freshman was Adrian Martinez, by a long shot #GBR— PowersBrewing (@PowersWilliamA) November 28, 2018Martinez>Moore.— Spencer Braun (@spencer_braun) November 28, [email protected] I think you misspelled Adrian Martinez!— Jeff Maschka (@JMaschka) November 29, 2018#AdrianMartinez— ❄️Shellie Y Griffiths❄️ (@yshellie) November 29, 2018Really? ? #GBR— Levi Kalb (@LeviMKalb) November 29, 2018A.Martinez 4 B1G FOTY! Not takin anything away from Moore, he’s a hell of a talent. IMO it takes a little more skill to be 18 yrs old & play QB in the big house, Madison & Columbus all while the team learns a NEW offense. Than it is to receive a kick, handoff or to catch a ball.— Tyler Cheech Reed (@ReedTyler84) November 28, 2018Ultimately, this doesn’t really matter. Martinez is a star and Nebraska fans get to enjoy him for another two or three years. They also have to deal with Moore in their division for that same period of time. With Frost elevating Nebraska and Jeff Brohm spurning his alma mater Louisville to stay at Purdue, the Big Ten West should be pretty fun for the foreseeable future.last_img read more
