The former champions had headed into the World Cup having earmarked all-rounder Vijay Shankar for the crucial spot in the batting order. However, an injury to Shankar gave Rahul an opportunity to bat at No. 4.While Rahul failed to deliver at No.4 in India’s 1st warm-up match against New Zealand on Saturday, he stepped up and shone in the audition against Bangladesh in Cardiff.”I think the biggest positive to come out was the way KL Rahul batted at four. He is such a class player. It is important that he gets runs and he is a sound player to get the scoreboard ticking. MS and Hardik were superb as well,” Virat Kohli said after India’s dominant win over Bangladesh.Kohli added: “We are glad we got what we wanted from the warm-ups. The last 15 overs were challenging, it can get pretty hectic in the field towards the end.”KL Rahul hit an excellent century from number four for India today, helping his team recover from 102/4 to eventually post a score of 359/7.Should he bat there during #CWC19? @sanjaymanjrekar had his say with @ZAbbasOfficial. pic.twitter.com/PYuU1kWYCXCricket World Cup (@cricketworldcup) May 28, 2019Rahul walked in to bat after India had lost both their openers, Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma, early in overcast conditions. He went on to smash 108, including 12 boundaries and 4 sixes, from just 99 balls as India posted a winning total of 359.advertisementRahul stitched a 33-run stand with Virat Kohli before putting on 164 with MS Dhoni who blasted 113 from just 78 balls.Kohli and the entire dressing room were up on their feet as Rahul raised his bat after scoring the hundred. After trying 12 different players over the last 2 years, India seem to have finally found their man at the No. 4 spot for the World Cup.Meanwhile, Kohli also lauded the bowling effort as India restricted Bangladesh to 264 in 49.3 overs.Much to the relief of the dressing room, Kuldeep Yadav who had been woefully out of form in Indian Premier League 2019 found his mojo and ran through the Bangladesh batting order with support from his wrist-spin partner Yuzvendra Chahal.Kuldeep and Chahal picked up 6 wickets between them, including that of half-centurions Litton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim. Jasprit Bumrah swung the momentum in favour of India early by striking twice in the 10th over.”We even bowled well, Bumrah got us the breakthrough and Chahal and Kuldeep got us six wickets,” Kohli said.”In the second half [in the coming matches], the ball might turn a little bit but initially the ball will swing and seam , which will be the most important phase for me and going into June the pitches will be getting flatter and flatter.”Also Read | MS Dhoni hits rapid hundred in warm-up against BangladeshAlso Read | Sourav Ganguly and John Wright reunite in commentary box, bond over banterAlso See:For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
