Long Live the Seed

first_imgA seed buried under the rubble of Herod the Great’s fortress took root and is now growing into a palm tree.  Science Now reported this as verification of claims that ancient seeds can still grow.  See also the National Geographic News report that added this record beats out the previous verifiable claim of ancient seed germination by 700 years.    The Israeli research team nicknamed the tree “Methuselah” after the Old Testament man who sets the Guinness record for human longevity at 969 years.    Radiocarbon tests of other seeds from the cache showed dates of 1995-2110 years.  That makes this remarkable tree a “date palm” in more than one sense. This seed lay buried in a fortress in the hot Judean desert for two thousand years and was still alive.  It has been growing now for two years into a healthy, green plant.  Can you imagine Herod the Great with all his wise men designing a machine that could be unpacked and made to work after two millennia?  If so, you’re probably thinking of a simple machine like a lever.  Try a miniaturized robot that reads codes, can grow and draw up nutrients from the desert and produce sweet fruit, then duplicate itself.  Amazing.  If all the king’s horses and all the king’s men couldn’t pull off a trick like that using intelligent design, don’t expect blind evolution to do it.(Visited 16 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

The national squad takes on Mexico in the opening game of the 2010 Fifa World Cup on 11 June in Johannesburg.Auto electrician Wynand Viljoen, mechanic Chris Neuwenhuizen, and panel beaters Tinashe Zivovo and Wellington Mugocha are the enterprising foursome. As their way of getting involved in the World Cup and adding to the growing buzz around the event, they have channelled their creativity into producing two stretch Beetles so far, with another one in production.Heads turn when these cars are on the road, and fans who wish to turn up at World Cup matches in style may rent them for their grand entrance.“I started building the first one for the fun of it,” said Viljoen, “and it has just taken off. I’ve had enquiries from a number of people, including a local coloured community and the Home Affairs department.”The Afrikaans Taal en Kultuur Vereeniging (Language and Culture Organisation) has also expressed interest, as they have arranged a World Cup song in Afrikaans.Labour of love“It took us about three months to build the first one,” said Mugocha, explaining that the stretch Beetle starts off as two cars that are each reduced by two-thirds and joined to produce the limo-style end result. One Beetle is cut at the windscreen and the other is cut at the rear window post. The two bigger sections are then welded together, providing a blank canvas for lavish football-themed refurbishment. The third stretch Beetle is just a shell at this stage, but once the welding and panel-beating work is finished, it too will emerge as a tribute to football and a testament to automotive skill. The team has not yet decided on a theme for the third car, but are working on some ideas. They hope to build another two or three, according to Mugocha.“The red one has a number of improvements on the white one, so our third car will be the best yet.”Proudly South AfricanFans need not worry about their safety – each car is completely road-worthy, and has received the green light from the licensing department. The first vehicle off the production line was the white model, which is topped with a huge fibreglass football. On the right-hand side of the car, just under the ball, sits a huge pair of flashy sunglasses, similar to the oversized accessories seen on makarapas – colourful modified hard hats worn at football matches. The lenses of the glasses are fully functional windows. The red Beetle carries a giant vuvuzela – the plastic African trumpet that either excites or irritates – just above the sunroof. The 4m-long instrument is wired to the sound system, an installation of teeth-jarring power, and is also used as the hooter. A standard-sized vuvuzela can fit onto the lower end, amplifying the sound.Inside, each has room for six people to sit in comfort. In addition to the driver and passenger seats, the white car has two double seats facing each other, while the red car’s seats are arranged conventionally, all facing forward. Both interiors are decked out in a football and vuvuzela theme, though with different colour schemes. Central locking and power windows have also been installed. The national flag and the words “Bafana Bafana” are prominent features of the exteriors. Both cars are powered by the trusty 1 600cc Beetle engine, which has seen thousands of Beetles around the world clock up vast mileage.Dedicated fansBafana Bafana’s inconsistent performances of late have not fazed the four colleagues at all, nor shaken their faith in the home side, despite some negative comments from members of the community. The foursome is convinced that South African football fans are set to be pleasantly surprised by their team’s World Cup performance.“We are 150% behind football and Bafana Bafana,” Mugocha said.last_img read more

How to Create Masks in Adobe Premiere Pro

first_imgNeed to create an image mask for color grades, special effects, or other applications? You can do so directly in Adobe Premiere Pro.Top image via Shutterstock.Adobe Premiere Pro allows you to create image masks directly within the program, which can save you time when editing video projects. The following step-by-step tutorial will show you how it’s done. 1. Set your workspace to the “Editing” layout.Once your timeline with the shots that need masking is open, go to “Window” and select “Workspaces,” and then choose “Editing.” Once you’ve done that, you should be able to select the “Effect Controls” tab in the upper left-hand window if it isn’t already open.2. Move the clip up one track and make sure any video tracks beneath it are empty.Creating a mask on a clip is similar to cutting a hole in it, which makes anything beneath it visible. If you make sure nothing is visible beneath your clip, there will be less room for error as you begin to learn the various functions of an image mask. 3. Position the playhead over the clip that needs masking and then click to highlight it.You should now be able to see the shot you are working with in the Program Monitor. By highlighting the clip, you ensure that the work you are doing affects only this clip and not anything else.4. Open the “Opacity” controls in the “Effect Controls” tab in the window on the upper left and create an opacity mask.Once you open the Opacity twirl-down controls, you will see three icons directly beneath the Opacity heading: an ellipse, a four-point polygon mask, and a pen tool. These are the three options for creating a custom mask. For now, click the pen tool. In this example, I am masking out the reflection in the mirror, so I put a point at each corner of the mirror.  Once you click the first point you created to close the shape, you will see the mask surrounded by empty space.5. Invert the mask using the newly activated mask controls under the Opacity twirl down menu.Click the check box a few rows down labeled “Inverted,” which makes the interior of the mask black, allowing you to see the original footage surrounding it. You can manipulate aspects such as the amount of the feathered edge, the mask size, and the initial placement of the mask in this step to customize how your mask blends in to the shot.  You can highlight “Mask (1)” to show you the mask you created in case you are not currently seeing the blue outline of your mask.6. Choose the footage you want to appear within your mask, and place it beneath the clip you just adjusted.Place the clip with the footage that you want to appear inside of your mask on Video Track 1 directly beneath your masked clip. You should now be able to see the footage in the area that you cut out in the previous steps. You can adjust the alignment of the footage on Video Track 1 by highlighting the clip and manipulating its position with the x and y coordinates in the “Motion” tab in “Effects Controls.”Potential masks to experiment with.In Premiere Pro, you do not have to create masks only within the Opacity effect controls. Although that is a powerful and widespread use of masking, more practical uses of a mask involve effect controls such as Lumetri Color to apply color to a specific region of the image. Masks can also help control a color qualifier in a secondary color-grading process to more accurately isolate your sampling. You can also use masks to create video in which the same actor appears twice (or more) within the same frame. The next step is to apply animation to the image masks you create by tracking objects within the image. After this, the magic of special effects really takes shape — all inside Premiere Pro.Do you know other masking tips or tricks? Let us know in the comments.last_img read more

The Elders Urge SADC Leaders To Support Smooth Transition In Zimbabwe

first_imgThe Elders have called on the heads of state of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to consider how they can support a successful and inclusive transition in Zimbabwe that will return stability and growth to the country.Writing to SADC member states ahead of the regional group’s summit in Swaziland later this month, The Elders noted that Zimbabwe is “on the verge of an important transition” which, if handled well, could lead to a peaceful and democratic change of leadership and a renewed focus on social and economic development. The letter was co-signed by Kofi Annan, Chair of The Elders, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former Chair, who is now an Honorary Elder, and Graça Machel, the co-founder of The Elders with her late husband, Nelson Mandela.“We firmly believe that a successful transition is vital not only for Zimbabwe but also for the region […] we are also convinced that, if the transition process is to succeed, it must be inclusive, transparent and framed in the national interest,” the three Elders wrote. OSU also lost redshirt senior goalkeeper Jillian McVicker for the season due to injury. The Buckeyes face off against tenth-ranked Nebraska in the first of two home games this weekend. Redshirt senior defender/forward Morgan Wolcott doesn’t anticipate Nebraska being an easy comeback game.“Nebraska always gives us a challenge,” Wolcott said. “They are a physical team … and we’ve struggled against them. (The team) feels prepared coming off of last weekend, which didn’t go as planned.”Nebraska has a 7-3-0 record in 2016, and the Cornhuskers will be coming to Columbus off of their most recent loss to Michigan. Overall, Nebraska has been playing a very consistent game with no notable statistical difference between its goals scored or its shots attempted in the first and second halves. The Buckeyes take on Iowa this Sunday at noon. Iowa owns a 6-4-0 record, with its two most recent losses being against Big Ten teams, Michigan and Michigan State. Before the Hawkeyes play OSU this weekend, Iowa takes on Penn State. The Hawkeyes have scored almost two-thirds of their goals in the second half. The Buckeyes have allowed 15 goals this season, 11 coming in the second half.OSU is determined to not allow the outcomes of their recent games affect their performance for the future.“Sometimes we get caught off guard … we need to get back to the basics of our system,” Wolcott said. “We tried to complicate things too much.”To keep things simple, the team has adopted a new mantra. In practices, the Buckeyes try to “get one percent better every day.”“If we can just keep getting one percent better, we feel like by November, when post-season comes, we’re going to be the team we want to be, but right now I’m pretty happy,” said senior forward Lindsay Agnew. “We have a great group of girls, so we just have to keep it going.” read more
