Will New Reverse Mortgage Policies Reverse Concerns?

Servicers Navigate the Post-Pandemic World 2 days ago Governmental Measures Target Expanded Access to Affordable Housing 2 days ago in Daily Dose, Featured, News Reverse mortgages have the potential to become more popular as more households with insufficient income reach retirement, according to a study done by the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College.Despite the possibility for increased popularity of reverse mortgages, or HECMs (Home Equity Conversion Mortgages), concerns have risen over an increased default rate for borrowers. To respond to the concerns, the report states that HUD, starting in 2013, began restricting initial withdrawals as well as introducing criteria for underwriting. With these policy changes, property taxes as well as insurance default could potentially reduce by 50 percent. The report states one of the concerns about implementing underwriting criteria is that it could significantly reduce the take-up of loans, therefore possibly conflicting with the program’s public mission to balance the goals of high take-up rates as well as low default rates. However, the simulated impact of credit-based underwriting standards on these loans’ take-up is estimated to be minimal, especially when such standards are paired with a required set-aside for tax and insurance payments instead of a hard cutoff. The report states that the collective impact of both policies could reduce take-up by 12 percent attributed to the restrictions on the initial withdrawal amount instead of the underwriting criteria. Yet, this impact on take-up is relatively minuscule for a larger reduction in estimated defaults. In order to assess the effects of the new rules, the report used a “unique” data-set linking borrower characteristics to their loan activity and the results showed that the new rules could reduce default rates by up to 50 percent while having only a small impact on take-up.Additionally, the study relied on data that compared a variety of borrowers on a large scale. The data found concluded that newer policies are helping reduce default rates across the board.Though, only 2 percent of older Americans who qualify currently hold a reverse mortgage, it has been projected that demand for these home loans in the past five years has exponentially increased. Former FIFA executives accused of World Cup bribes

first_img(BBC) – Former FIFA executives took bribes in return for voting for Russia and Qatar to host the World Cup, according to U.S. prosecutors. In what could be a highly significant twist in FBI’s long-running investigation into allegations of football corruption, a new indictment was revealed in the U.S. District Court on Monday. The documents claim several former FIFA executive committee members “were offered or received bribes in connection with their votes”.The Department of Justice makes allegations against Nicolas Leoz, the former president of the South American governing body Conmebol, and ex-Brazil federation supremo Ricardo Teixeira. Both are accused of taking money “in exchange for their votes in favour of Qatar to host the 2022 World Cup”. Qatar denies the allegations.Disgraced former FIFA vice-president Jack Warner of Trinidad and Tobago was also allegedly paid £4M through a host of offshore shell companies to back Russia’s 2018 bid.Russia beat England to win the right to host the most recent World Cup in 2018. Warner was president of the North and Central American and Caribbean Confederation, CONCACAF.Another former FIFA ExCo member – Guatemala football chief, Rafael Salguero – was allegedly promised a bribe to vote for Russia.Leoz died last year under house arrest in his native Paraguay, having fought extradition to the U.S. Teixeira has been banned from the game for life by FIFA for taking bribes for marketing and media rights for football competitions between 2006 and 2012.Teixeira and Warner, who is also banned for life, have avoided extradition to the U,S,. Salguero was banned last year, having admitted corruption.Former executives at U.S. television giant 21st Century Fox have also been charged in the indictment with making payments to South American football officials to secure broadcast rights.“The profiteering and bribery in international soccer have been deep-seated and commonly known practices for decades,” said FBI assistant director-in-charge William Sweeney.“The FBI officials are investigating the illicit handshakes and backroom deals hidden in the infrastructure of soccer events, venues and marketing contracts.“The first public charges date back to 2015. This should illustrate to everyone still hoping to score millions corruptly, we’re going to find you.”WHAT IS THE BACKGROUND?Almost 10 years have now passed since FIFA controversially voted for Russia and Qatar to host the sport’s showpiece event. But it was only in 2015, following a dramatic dawn raid, at a Zurich hotel close to the governing body’s headquarters, that the U.S. Department of Justice announced it was investigating football and TV executives enriching themselves through the game. The scandal sparked the worst crisis in FIFA’s history, with its disgraced president Sepp Blatter eventually standing aside.A total of 42 persons have been indicted, with 26 pleading guilty.HOW IMPORTANT COULD THIS BE?With Russia staging its World Cup almost two years ago, the focus of the potential impact of these fresh allegations will be on Qatar as it enters the final phase of preparations for the event. This is not the first time officials have been accused of corruption linked to the Gulf state’s bid during the sprawling FBI probe. In 2017 Alejandro Burzaco, a former TV executive, told a jury in New York that Leoz, Teixeira – and the now former Argentina football chief Julio Grondona – had been paid to vote for Qatar, who beat the U.S. in the vote. But never before have U.S. prosecutors formally laid out in such detail how the alleged corruption was conducted. However, the indictment does not specify who was behind the alleged bribery.Despite years of suspicion over how they won the vote, Qatar and Russia have always denied any wrongdoing, and both were effectively cleared by FIFA’s own investigation in 2017.But FIFA may find itself under renewed pressure to reopen an inquiry into how the votes were won.Yesterday, FIFA said it would “continue to provide full cooperation” and is “closely following these investigations”.A statement read: “It is important to point out that FIFA has itself been accorded victim status in the U.S. criminal proceedings and senior FIFA officials are in regular contact with the U.S. Department of Justice.“The FIFA ethics committee has already imposed sanctions, including life bans, on football officials mentioned in this process.”In response to the accusations, Alexei Sorokin, chief executive of Russia’s 2018 World Cup, told the Interfax news agency: “This is only the opinion of lawyers. We have repeatedly said that our bid was transparent.“At the time we answered all questions, including from the investigation branch of FIFA and from the media, we handed over all needed documents.“We have nothing to add to this and we will not respond to attempts to cast a shadow on our bid.”Qatar’s Supreme Committee for Delivery Legacy (SC) said in a statement it “strongly denies the allegation” contained within the court papers. It added: “Despite years of false claims, evidence has never been produced to demonstrate that Qatar won the rights to host the FIFA World Cup 2022 unethically, or by means that contravened FIFA’s strict bidding rules.“The SC maintains that it strictly adhered to all rules and regulations for the 2018/2022 FIFA World Cups bidding process and any claim to the contrary is baseless and will be fiercely contested.”last_img read more

Lagos church victims repatriated to SA

first_img6 February 2015A C130 military aircraft landed in Pretoria in the early hours of Friday morning, 6 February, containing the bodies of the remaining victims of the building collapse in Lagos, Nigeria.“The mortal remains of the outstanding 11 compatriots who perished on 12 September 2014 when the Scoan [Synagogue Church of All Nations] guesthouse collapsed in Nigeria are all back,” Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe said shortly after the aircraft landed at Waterkloof Air Force Base. The bodies were brought back to the country by a team of military health personnel and forensic pathologists who had departed about 9pm on 2 February. Some 81 South Africans were killed and 25 were injured when the multi-storey building collapsed in Lagos nearly five months ago.Following the disaster, President Jacob Zuma appointed an inter-ministerial committee to oversee the government’s response and to ensure the injured and the deceased were returned to South Africa. The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NatJoints) co-ordinated the various role players and led the technical planning for the identification and repatriation of the deceased and the return of injured South Africans. In November 2014, 74 bodies were repatriated and a formal reception ceremony was held for the families of the victims. At the time, 11 bodies had not been positively identified and could not be repatriated.“The mortal remains are now back. The families can now close the chapter as we are closing it today so that the last rites are performed so they can bury them with dignity,” Radebe said.He thanked Zuma for establishing the task team to deal with repatriation process, and acknowledged NatJoints, medical personnel, scientists, officials from the Department of Social Development and members of the South African Police Service. He was grateful for the assistance of the government of Nigeria in the identification and repatriation. The 11 bodies are expected to be transported to the nearest government mortuaries in the provinces where the families live. The government has encouraged anyone in need of grief counselling services to call the Social Development Department’s toll-free number on 0800 428 428, or to send a “Please call me” text message to *120*7867#. Brand South Africa calls for a single national narrative

first_imgAt a workshop held in Johannesburg this week, Brand South Africa urged stakeholders and provinces to align themselves with its brand so that the nation would have one story, well told. Sithembile Ntombela of Brand South Africa said they are busy developing a Country Messaging Framework so that South Africans in all provinces could tell the same message when doing nation branding. (Image: Priya Pitamber) Melissa JavanProvinces should align themselves with Brand South Africa‘s message when it came to nation branding, said Sithembile Ntombela, the acting chief marketing officer of the country’s international marketing agency.Ntombela hosted a nation brand masterclass for several stakeholders during a workshop at the Gauteng Investment Centre in Sandton, Johannesburg, on 19 August. They were introduced to two of Brand South Africa’s programmes, namely the Nation Brand Master Class and the South African Competitiveness Forum. The former seeks to train and equip marketers and communicators with the necessary skills to profile the South African nation brand. The latter is a platform on which the agency seeks to find ways to improve the country’s competitiveness.Ntombela said she had visited various provinces’ stalls at the Tourism Indaba in May, and found that the brand information of several was full of jargon. She said this made her feel a disconnection with the nation brand. Brand South Africa is therefore developing a Country Messaging Framework to address this matter. The framework was still being developed and stakeholder input was needed.Elements of nation branding included people, tourism, governance, investment, culture and heritage.Provinces should not do their own thing, Ntombela said, especially when it came to tourism. “The dress-up of South Africa is important. It is how we carry ourselves as custodians. The storytelling aspect is the driver behind what you accomplish.“We have to sell the basics right, know what our values [our esteem] as South Africans are.”She said brand alignment was about messaging, adding that all messages represent where South Africa came from and what it represented. “But we tend to contradict ourselves.”Brand South Africa’s messaging would be aligned with the National Development Plan. The focus of Ntombela’s masterclass was that South Africans should have “one story, well told” when doing nation branding. In meeting this, she recommended that provinces should align with the Brand South Africa brand identity.Nation branding was important because of a country’s identity, purpose and national pride. “We want to attract tourists and stimulate investments.”The question that should be asked of South Africans, she stressed, was what they were doing in their province to stimulate this.last_img read more

AP source: Knicks agree to trade Carmelo Anthony to Thunder

first_imgKammuri turning to super typhoon less likely but possible — Pagasa Brace for potentially devastating typhoon approaching PH – NDRRMC Anthony agreed to waive his no-trade clause to complete the deal, which was first reported by The Vertical.Phil Jackson spent the latter part of his time in New York making it clear he wanted to move Anthony. But a deal was difficult because the 33-year-old forward has two years and about $54 million left on his contract, along with the ability to decline any trade. He had long maintained that he wanted to stay in New York, but the constant losing and a chance to play with a talented lineup convinced him it was finally time to go.After making the postseason each of his first 10 seasons, he has been on the sidelines the last four years and said at the end of last season his priority was a chance to win. He wouldn’t have that in New York, where the Knicks are emphasizing youth and have little proven talent with which to surround Anthony. But he is close with Westbrook and George and should fit in nicely. He can possibly settle into the spot-up shooter role he’s played in the Olympics, where he’s won a record three gold medals and is the career scoring leader for the U.S. men.ADVERTISEMENT E.T. returns to earth, reunites with grown-up Elliott in new ad  BSP sees higher prices in November, but expects stronger peso, low rice costs to put up fight In this April 4, 2017, file photo, New York Knicks’ Carmelo Anthony (7) checks in as coach Jeff Hornacek, left, watches during the first half of an NBA basketball game against the Chicago Bulls in New York. An AP source said agreed on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2017, to trade Anthony to the Oklahoma Thunder.  APNEW YORK, United States — Carmelo Anthony won’t be at Knicks training camp after all. He’ll be in Oklahoma City, joining Russell Westbrook and Paul George in a loaded lineup. The Knicks agreed to trade Anthony to the Thunder on Saturday, saving themselves a potentially awkward reunion next week with the player they’d been trying to deal since last season.ADVERTISEMENT The trade ends an unfulfilling 6 1/2-year run in New York for Anthony, where he could never shake his reputation of an elite scorer who can’t carry a team to a ring. The Knicks made the playoffs his first three seasons and reached the second round in 2013, when Anthony led the league with 28.7 points per game. But after that they never seriously proved they could do anything consistently beyond make headlines. And Anthony was right in the middle of that, with constant trade speculation after Jackson’s criticism of Anthony’s game. Jackson and the Knicks parted ways in June and though the Knicks kept looking, team president Steve Mills and general manager Scott Perry told Anthony they wouldn’t accept a trade that would hinder their plans to rebuild through youth. It didn’t help that Anthony had told the Knicks he would accept trades only to Houston and Cleveland, but a deal was finally found when he agreed to add Oklahoma City to his list of destinations.Anthony moved into the top 25 on the NBA’s career scoring list last season, and maybe the Thunder can help him reach elusive team success.Jackson noted that the Knicks hadn’t been able to win with Anthony, though one division title and three playoff berths give Anthony the best resume of anyone who played for the team in the 21st century. He had higher aspirations when he began pushing Denver to trade him to New York in 2010. But the Knicks gave up much of their young talent and future assets to get him, hindering their ability to fortify the team around their leading scorer in recent years.Anthony averaged 22.4 points last season and made his 10th All-Star Game, though that was the second straight season he finished well off his career average of 24.8 per game.Kanter, a 6-foot-11 center from Turkey who was the third pick of the 2011 draft, has averaged 11.3 points for Utah and the Thunder. He posted a video thanking the Oklahoma City community and imploring the Thunder to beat Golden State.“It’s a new adventure for me. New York, so please pray for me,” he said.McDermott has averaged 8.0 points and will be playing for his third team since being selected with the No. 11 pick in 2014. /cbb LATEST STORIES Lacson: PH lost about P161.5B tax revenue from big trading partners in 2017 PLAY LIST 03:46Lacson: PH lost about P161.5B tax revenue from big trading partners in 201701:48NBA: Kawhi, George seek more for Clippers than beating Lakers00:50Trending Articles01:37Protesters burn down Iran consulate in Najaf01:47Panelo casts doubts on Robredo’s drug war ‘discoveries’01:29Police teams find crossbows, bows in HK university01:35Panelo suggests discounted SEA Games tickets for students02:49Robredo: True leaders perform well despite having ‘uninspiring’ boss02:42PH underwater hockey team aims to make waves in SEA Games View comments Nonong Araneta re-elected as PFF president Fire hits houses in Mandaluyong City New York will get Enes Kanter, Doug McDermott and a draft pick, a person with knowledge of the deal said.
