As Guyanese prepare to celebrate Diwali, the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh lit the biggest diya on Sunday evening at Rahaman’s Park, to signify the beginning of the Festival of LightsParticipants turned out in their brightly coloured Indian garments to witness a cultural extravaganza as they prepared to usher in the festive season.Diwali is hailed as the Festival of Lights, symbolising the triumph of good over evil.The controversy surrounding the date for Diwali celebrations was virtually forgotten, as Hindu adherents joined in singing and dancing as they celebrated the beginning of this auspicious occasion.Pandit Hardesh Tiwari of the Viraat Sabha alluded to the difficulties in the Hindu community and urged Guyanese to ignore the negativism and embrace the true meaning of the holiday.He urged Hindus to unite themselves for it is their sacred duty to foster the culture that has nurtured generations.In his remarks, HSS President Ravi Dev urged Hindus to become living examples of Hinduism by putting values to work.Local Non-Governmental Organisation, The Caribbean Voice (TCV) representative Daniel Ali shared a brief history of the celebration as he sent Diwali greetings to all Guyanese.The Ministry of the Presidency representative, Malcolm Harripaul also used the opportunity to wish all of Guyana a happy Diwali.last_img
